Teaching Yoga to the Innocent

July 4, 2013

You are familiar with the benefits of yoga. I am sure if you have been following my blog, as a resource, you have learned about lots of benefits. But hopefully, also, you have come to understand my passion for discernment and education when it comes to adopting the culture too.

Sometimes, it is hard to practice yoga in a secular atmosphere, and to know when a practice crosses the line with our religious convictions. Even for adults this is hard at times.

What do you think about children doing yoga in physical education classes at their public schools?

I have to admit I am a bit torn. Children are innocent and impressionable. While I believe that someone cannot sin “accidentally” or without their knowledge of what they are doing, I also am uneasy about certain religious practices like chanting being done with children.

I think children can benefit a lot from yoga. Not only can it help them with strength and exercise, it can teach them patience and peace of mind. It can help them in their relationships at school and home. I have found yoga to be a wonderful aid in that.

So what do you think? Should yoga be taught in public school to children?

One response to Teaching Yoga to the Innocent

  1. I don’t think it should be taught to children unless it can be combined with Christian teaching. Children will soak up anything, including the teachings of the world that are contrary to the teachings of God’s Word. Children need to be prepared for the onslaught of false teaching that will come at them from school and media. We need to plant a firm foundation in them so they can know God, and not believe the lies of the world. They need to know that God created them and loves them and has provided everything they need.
