The Yoga Legacy

June 14, 2013

I love the pictures I see in The Yoga Journal. A young mom set in a shoulder stand, balancing her baby like a trapeze artist. Or a middle-aged mother gracefully flying in standing bow, her little girl stretching her limbs in the same manner. As a woman, hoping to have children of her own some day, these pictures tug at the sentimental heart in me.

I hope that some day I have a child of my own to pass on the legacy of yoga. But more importantly, I hope that I pass on the legacy of meditation and reflection on Christ that I incorporate into my yoga practice.

When I was visiting my family, I was so enthused to see my little niece and nephews doing yoga poses they had learned from their mother. Even at ages 9, 6, and 3 they picked up on her daily practice. Six year old, Haley, even joined us in a 30 minute routine along with her mother and grandmother. The legacy of yoga is one of health, fun, and reflection. And I love to see the benefits of peace and wellness reflected in their smiles.

What legacy have you passed down to your children? Or if you don’t have children, what do you want to pass to your future children or the younger generation?
