The Language of the Yoga Tribe

July 10, 2012

You won’t see me at a Star Wars convention or hear me recite behind the scenes information about the Harry Potter movies. I can’t hold a conversation about football or memorize the models of antique cars. But put me in a room with other yoga practitioners and teachers, and I barely breathe in between sentences.

You see, there is only so much you can study and practice on your own before you need a tribe with whom you can converse. The tribe shares your passions and ideas and inspires you to consider different ideas. The tribe provides growth and encourages steadfastness. The tribe makes your brain race, and your eyes light up. You could talk for hours with these people about the subject you both love so much.

I realize this when I get together with other knowledgeable yogis.

We speak in the same terms. We understand the “yoga speak” that outside people do not understand.

It is a happy feeling to belong to a community.

It is this way with all beings. We all have a deep need to belong. Whether we like to admit it or not, we need people. We need a tribe who shares our desires and understands our fears. Translate this spiritually and  I would say that I wish this for the Church.

That we can be all things to all people, meeting the need of belonging in every heart within every tribe in the Person of Christ.

To what tribes do you belong? Has Christ and His Church permeated the walls of that tribe to meet your deepest need of belonging?
