When Friends with Scales Die

July 5, 2012

Our turtle died Tuesday. He’d been in the family longer than I have. Seth got him about 4 or 5 years ago. It is always a sad day in our home when a pet dies. No matter how small the creature, we develop an emotional connection to them.

As I awoke this morning, as my head of feathers begins to shake free and return to the concrete world, memories of our turtle began to dance behind my eyelids.

And I realized how special animals are, even to the human race. We may be the top of the food chain but we can not deny our moral instincts that make our hearts melt when we look into the eyes of an innocent animal.

Why do kids want to keep every creature they find in their backyard? They put them in a box and feed them clover. Or they cry when a baby bird falls from his nest.

The innocence of children tells us a lot about how I think Earth intended to be.

We can’t deny that all living things have a special design. They have a personality that connects us to them. They are more than animals. They are friends.

What kind of interesting pets have you had? Did you ever have a pet die whom you had a very close connection to? Tell us about them.

  1. I used to have goats. They are very interestng and fun! Esp. the babies. We also used to drink the milk. I used to talk to our chickens, and when a certain rooster died (Actually he was hen-pecked to death) I was upset about it.
