The Beauty of Cheese

June 19, 2012

Have you ever met a cheesy Christian? I’m sure you have. You may even be one, and breaking news, I don’t think that is always a bad thing. It is so cool to make fun of cheesy Christians or just plain cheesy people for that matter but if you find yourself discovering beauty in the cheese, don’t sweat. There are benefits to a lot of things in which we wouldn’t expect.

I was raised on Christian radio. I was well versed in cliche phrases, sometimes loosely based in scripture. And puns and songs with simple meanings. I have since then been challenged by the persecutors of cheesy Christians to think deeply, examine the culture from which my words and beliefs come, and dive deep into the richness of Christianity.

Yet. There is a place for simplicty. I know that most Christian music is not much when it comes to musicality but familiar lyrics, dripping with emotion, have the ability to bring me into the presence of God.

All I am concluding, is in the midst of being intelligent with our faith, what if we also fear not the cheese?

When I find myself more concerned with what the “trendy” Christians think of me rather than being true to myself and what best aids me in my spiritual connection with Christ, I am missing the point. There is beauty in the cheese if it speaks to your heart and draws you deeper in love with God.

Am I crazy? How have you been a cheesy Christian? In what ways do you worship best?

  1. If you are crazy then I am too :o) Maybe I have been a cheesy Christian but didn’t notice in the past, but I seen a few of them. I am always listening to KLove radio – I find I enjoy the early mornings to worship as I sing along with the radio. Fills my heart/soul up – like drinking coffee.
    Enjoying your blog!!!!

  2. Thanks for sharing, Dawn! I started thinking about this when my ipod broke before class last Sunday and I had to play the radio but found myself enjoying some cheesy Christian music. I decided to put the critique aside and just enjoy some worship.
