Reflections of Yourself in Your Mat

March 29, 2012

“The attitude you bring to your mat is the attitude you carry throughout your life.”

This is wisdom I have gleaned from my elder yogis. The physical and mental obstacles you face during your practice reveal your true colors and brings you face to face with it.

I’ve learned I’m insecure. I give up when I lose my confidence.  At times I am defensive, apathetic, refusing to submit to the practice. At other times I am proud, pushing my body past it natural abilities and hurting myself.

We have all had past experiences that create within us the defense mechanisms and behavioral responses that make us who we are. We have been picked on and beat up emotionally. We beat ourselves up emotionally. And we’ve learned how to deal.

There is something about yoga that brings you face to face with this soul stuff.

It breaks down those emotional barriers and exposes the vulnerable parts. Yoga does this for me when it quiets my mind and allows me to see myself with eyes wide open.

What have you learned about yourself through your practice? Do you agree with the statement: “the attitude you bring to you mat is the attitude you carry throughout your life”?

  1. I don’t know much about yoga, but our attitude has a lot to do with anything we do. It makes a big difference. I had a bad attitude the other day, when reading, I remembered the wonderful gift of God’s grace. it sure changed my attitude!
