Speak No Evil

file000594744442On occasion in my classes, we will do an exercise where you rub your palms together and rest them on your eyes and then your ears, and then your mouth.

Taking five long breaths between each, the philosophy of the pose resonates in your mind with each resting posture.

The philosophy is one from yoga spirituality. “See no evil. Hear no evil. Speak no evil.”

Yet as a follower of Christ and in the spirit of love that Christ embodies perfectly for us, I agree with this meditation. And as I evaluate my attitude toward others in my day and the things on which I choose to meditate, I want to adopt this philosophy.

The part that I can relate to the most is the “speak no evil.”

It is not always easy and sometimes unnecessary to abstain from seeing or hearing evil around you. I don’t want to make for myself a bubble of naivety but I do want to be the type of Christian who speaks with love and kindness, compassion and understanding at all times. It is easy to speak badly of someone when you have been hurt, but I want to be someone who can let it go and embrace them through prayer and continual compassion. I want to be someone who hears others gossip, and doesn’t let it lead me to do the same.

Which part of “See no evil. Hear no evil. Speak no evil.” do you think is most important? Which one is the hardest by which to abide?

One response to Speak No Evil

  1. I agree. Let us speak words of cheer, compassion, encouragement, etc. which God helps us to do through Christ.
