Life Beyond Arts and Crafts

August 30, 2012

I just recently learned some great tips on creativity from an artist.  I would never consider myself an artist. I have the handwriting of a third grade boy and I can not cut or draw a straight line. But creativity goes so much deeper than arts and crafts.  We are all creative beings. We prove this everyday with our lives. We each have a unique design in each of us, set by our Creator. And being made in His image, I believe we all have the potential to create. Whether that is a new marketing plan or teaching technique, whether a new ice cream flavor or line of clothing. We all are born to dream, to work, and to create.

Some of the best advice for creating art is the simple idea that what you put into your mind comes out of it. The best way to ensure you are growing and thinking and creating beautiful things is to learn from people you admire.Read books. Interview other artists.

Learn as much as you can about what you love to do and you will find your creative stride.

Let me tell you about something I am working on.  It is called posture meditations. You may come to one of my classes and see me leading my practicioners through a scripture passage, moving our bodies in rhythm with the words of the prophets of old. Feeling the promises of Christ settle in our ears as we settle into our postures.

As our breath rises and falls our minds become clear and we can really focus on what God is saying to us.

We inhale and lift our arms to God. Stop. And listen to His voice. We bow when we bend, yielding to His will. We stand in tree and imagine the foundation we build in ourselves. The physical becomes more than exercise. It is a visual reminder of our relationship with God.

What are you passionate about? What do you create?
