Portal to the Soul

April 10, 2012

From the time I was a young girl, trying to cultivate a relationship with God, I found it difficult to stop life in order to get my head into prayer or scripture. It took some time and learning about myself but I found that singing was the perfect transition into a clear mind focused on God. “Blow Wind Blow” brought me into the presence of God day after day for years. I would go off alone, close my eyes tight and sing at the top of my lungs. By the end of the song the words had become my own. I was exhausted with emotion, broken, and ready. The worship had begun. And I was ready to talk to God like He was sitting beside me in the room.

There are few things that can transform us into a different realm, removing distractions, molding emotions. For some it is art. For others it may be reading. Maybe writing brings God into the forefront of your attention or walking. Music has always been that for me.

Now, yoga has become that portal device as well. I work my body in a quiet place where by the end I am tired, broken, and ready for God’s presence.

It clears my head and allows me focus on one central thing: The Lord.

Do you find it hard to connect with God in the middle of your day? What helps you get your head into focus and ready to talk to God?

  1. Being alone and reading the Bible out loud, which brings me into prayer. Reading other inspiring things. Taking a walk amidst the beauty of God’s creation. Yes, music, definitely! Beautiful music brings me peace and joy.
But even if things are hectic around me, God’s Spirit reminds me to take a deep breath, think of His Grace, and keep going.

  2. Yes. That would be another good way to clear you mind. Deep breathing to relax yourself and focus on God is good. Meditation is simply that to me. Healthy breathing that transforms your mind into a quieter place where God can be seen clearer.
