Surrender Your Flesh

February 23, 2012

Turn your palms over. Face up. Is this an easy posture for you or does it cause a sense of unease and awkwardness? I observed a lot about this simple posture during my yoga practice one evening. It is so unnatural for me at the beginning of my routine to let my palms relax in a position that points them toward the heavens.

Every fiber of my humanity wants to clinch my fists and hide my flesh from the world.

How many other times do we turn our palms out toward someone? To be handcuffed, to ask for something, to worship… These are all acts of submission and vulnerability.

It is interesting how we use the vulnerable parts of our body to represent the vulnerable parts of our souls.

Yet by the end of the routine, my body and mind have been disciplined and stretched and worked over so much, that my natural reaction is to lay completely open and relaxed. My palms seem to surrender into a natural state of worship.

When do you feel comfortable being vulnerable with God?  How can we offer our worship and submission to God more than after a practice?
