What is a mantra? Oftentimes in my classes it is a scripture verse or prayer. But traditionally, it can be as simple as a word or syllable that creates a therapeutic effect in the body and mind through the repetitious vibrations it makes with the voice.
Repetition is an important part of learning. Anyone who has sought to teach anything, understands that. But recently, I realize how much repetition it takes to truly hear what is being said or taught. How often do we read scripture in the Bible, slowly and truly, letting the truth of it sink into our bones?
Our day shares its time with so many things. We all wear so many hats and have so many responsibilities. So when it comes to reading the Bible, oftentimes I get stuck in the mentality that I should cover as much area as possible in the time I have. But in this case, I propose less is more.
A lot of meditation is repetition. Taking one verse or even one word; a name for Christ. And repeating it over and over. So here is my meditation challenge for you today.
Hebrews 1:3 “The Son is the radiance of Gods glory and the exact representation of his being.”
Set aside at least 5-10 minutes. Find a quiet place to sit and meditate. Keep the room well lit and make some tea or coffee if you have trouble staying awake. Set your posture. Sitting up tall, feet firmly on the ground if you are in a chair or sit crossed legged on the floor, block, or pillow.
Set your breath. Breathing slowly and intentionally. Letting the steady pattern bring yourself into a quiet mind, ready to focus on the words set before you and accept the insight God has to speak to you.
Repeat the verse out loud 3-5 times. Keeping your breath full and steady. Then move to breaking the verse down. Taking it word by word in your head or aloud.
Ask yourself, what does this say about the Son, Jesus? What does this say about God the Father? How does this apply to us, God’s adopted sons and daughters?
Lastly, say a prayer. Ask God to continue to reveal the depth of this mantra throughout your day.
Happy Meditating!
